Praising what is lost makes the remembrance dear... William Shakespeare

Please do not forget Remembrance Day this Sunday, 11 November at 11am, to stop for one minute to remember those who fought for the freedom we enjoy today.

Why we stop - On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, in the 11th month of 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent. This year marks 100 years since the Armistice was signed to end the First World War — the culmination of four years of commemoration. It’s an opportunity to remember those who fought to protect our way of life. To reflect on their sacrifice and to be thankful for the freedom we enjoy today. So this Remembrance Day, come together, stop for a minute and remember them.

The symbol for Armistice Day/Remembrance Day is the red poppy - the bright red wildflower was chosen as a symbol of hope because it once grew in the fields torn apart by shellfire and tank tracks where many fallen soldiers met their end.

Mr. Jeeves and his Fillies - Melbourne Cup

Despite the number of bets placed, sadly there were few winners on the day... Carmen managed to have a win and Shelley won $60 in the shoe shop sweep, so all was not lost and we were fortunate enough to be able to share the time with some of our special local supporters who dropped in for a little bubbly to celebrate ‘The Day That Stops The Nation’!  We also enjoyed great platters of antipasta from the Hot Shott Team and pizzas from Black Smith, all of which were 'delish'!

The Mateship Runs has become part of Remembrance Celebrations on the Gold Coast

More than 700 people will pound the pavement in the fourth annual Mateship Run on the Gold Coast on Saturday, 10 November 2018.

The Mateship Run is an opportunity to come together and recognise the extraordinary contribution our armed services make – past and current – through participating in a healthy fun run or walk, while also helping Young Veteran Support Services raise awareness and funds.

Held along the Currumbin foreshore, the event will see community participants and returned servicemen and women unite to raise funds for young local veterans. The fun run and walk is an opportunity to come together and recognise the extraordinary contribution our armed services make – past and current.

The Mateship Run has become an iconic part of remembrance celebrations for the Gold Coast and provides an opportunity for all ages and fitness levels to run, walk or push distances including a 10-kilometre run, 5-kilometre walk or run, 1.5-kilometre Currumbin RSL Community Walk or 1.5-kilometre Junior Bolt.

Invictus Games gold medallist and Gold Coast local, Dean Knobel, will be the official race starter on the day.

Participants of all ages, sizes and fitness levels are encouraged to enter in the walk or run with friends, family and work colleagues as we celebrate the camaraderie and mateship of our heroes.

The event will be held from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday 10th November 2018 at Currumbin RSL, 165 Duringan Street, Currumbin, cost: $25.00 to $60.00.
