Youth would be an ideal state if it came a little later in life - Herbert Henry Asquith
Our saying this week came about by the fact that it came to my attention that the “youth of today” (now I sound really old…) do not know the word “nous”… I said to one of our Team members recently – “I am really looking for someone with a bit of nous” and they looked at me like I was trying to speak my broken Italian, and said “what is that?” Oh, dear – and it is such a great word!
I explained ‘nous’ as “common sense”, “street wise”, however, according to Wikipedia “Nous, sometimes equated to intellect or intelligence, is a term from classical philosophy for the faculty of the human mind necessary for understanding what is true or real” and further “In philosophy, common English translations include "understanding" and "mind"; or sometimes "thought" or "reason" (in the sense of that which reasons, not the activity of reasoning). It was also noted that "In colloquial British English, nous also denotes "good sense", which is close to one everyday meaning it had in Ancient Greece.” So perhaps ‘common sense’ is applicable…
I then recalled a grandfather relaying a comment that his granddaughter made to him “why is it called common sense, when it is not very common?”… So, is it that the word “nous’ has been lost in time, or is it that it is not common?
Speaking of ‘youth’, it is nice to see a lot of young families moving back into Main Beach. It is really noticeable and gives a very positive vibe to the street. The cafés are busy – with young and ‘aged’ (never old..). Speaking of never ‘old’ – we would like to welcome back one of our ‘part-time’ locals, Jean, a young women of 99 years, who often pops in on her walks to say “hello”. And, we mean walks – she told me the other day, that notwithstanding a ‘small’ break in her foot, she had been back walking to Macintosh Island – do you know how far that is from Tedder – I believe it would be about 2 kilometres. Needless to say, I started my regular morning walks again this week…

We also had a settlement this week, with our new ‘part time locals and freezing Melbourne’ buyers settling on their new holiday home in Xanadu East – Congratulations and welcome! We thought we would share a picture of one of their family members who will join them in the future in their Main Beach home – Jazzy. We have dropped her into the Mr. Jeeves slot this week. Jazzy is pictured after sneaking into one of the suitcases bound for Main Beach this week – she did not at all like being left behind. The other photo is of Jazzy under the red blanket – also “freezing” in Melbourne…
