This week at MBPS
The secret to a long life is to stay busy, get plenty of exercise and don't drink too much. Then again, don't drink too little - Herman Smith-Johannsen
Also, in our search for meaningful sayings this week we found:
A long life may not be good enough, but a good life is long enough - Benjamin Franklin
The secret to longevity is to keep breathing - Sophie Tucker
When thinking a theme for our Newsletter this week, it was hard go past the words “longevity” and “persistence”, given the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II this weekend. Whether a Royalist or not it is impossible not to admire and appreciate the women behind “The Queen”, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. What a smile! This picture was taken yesterday, 2nd June at the age of 96…
How does that relate to MBPS and our business, real estate? Well, thanks to my friend, Mr. Google, I found related words for longevity, such as - vitality, durability, endurance, potency, fecundity, length of service, seniority, survival, perpetuity and ranking - they just seemed to relate! Persistence goes without saying…
I did come across a very interesting article relating to the Queen – “Live Like the Queen: 12 Royal Secrets of Longevity” by Charmaine Gooden, from which I noted a few interesting points, including comments by Dr. Michael Gordon. The article stated “Dr. Michael Gordon, a geriatric medical specialist who trained in Scotland and met the Queen’s mother, feels that nowadays, even being in your 80s is not so old. “I’m a geriatrician and, in my practice, that’s like late adolescence. She’s not 100 yet. Her mother, the Queen Mother, lived to 101, and there’s a pretty good chance, barring the unexpected, that Elizabeth can get there herself.” The article went on to say “Successful aging, says Gordon, is measured in both quantity of years and quality of life - not simply breathing but retaining vitality and enthusiasm, enough to make life well worth living”.
The two of the ‘12 Royal Secrets” that caught my eye were points 7 and 8:
7. Drink a cuppa tea … and barley water - They even provided a recipe for the barley water - “1/2 cup pearl barley, 2 1/2 quarts boiling water, two lemons, six oranges and brown sugar to taste”.
8. Alcohol … in moderation - “There is no question that in this family, alcohol is part of their normal activities, and small amounts of alcohol, unless there is an illness or contraindication with medication, appear to have a beneficial effect on the heart and brain,” says Dr Gordon. The article also went on to say “Studies show evidence that having red wine - rich in the antioxidant resveratrol - in moderation is good for us.
So, not only will MBPS enjoy longevity, apparently if I keep up the red wine, then so will I… Let’s live like the Queen!
At MBPS this week –
I had cause to speak with a valuer in relation to reviewing a valuation he had completed for us in mid-April and to question whether we should be readdressing, given the ‘current market’, the ‘hype’ about a decline/interest rates etc. The answer was a definite “no” and I was very pleased to hear his comments, which acknowledged that, yes sales have slowed, but that is also a matter of continued lack of stock and yes, the number of valuations they are doing has declined, however, he stated “there is nothing to indicate a decline in prices”. Good news for Sellers in this market, however, not so good for Buyers…

Yes, of course, price guide is also an important factor.
