A smile a day keeps the doctor away...
This past week or so, I have been thinking of ‘sharing a smile’ and the impact that a smile may have on some, who may not be having a good day, for whatever reason. So, our theme for the Newsletter this week was to have been the ‘gift’ of a smile – thus our saying. We then realised that it is the Australia Day long weekend, however, thought it still appropriate, given it is a part of our Australian culture to be friendly and give the ‘gift’ of a smile as we pass, even strangers on the street...
I grew up with the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” which is attributed to Benjamin Franklin. However recently, when researching for an appropriate saying relating to my thought of a smile being a ‘gift’, my friend “Google” offered an article by a Psychology Professor Sheldon Cohen titled “A smile a day keeps the doctor away” in which the Professor stated, “People who are happy, relaxed or exhibit other positive emotions are less likely to catch colds than those who are unhappy or anxious...” I then read an article by a young man who at the age of 11 was unhappy and one of his teachers gave him a remedy for unhappiness... Yes, giving a smile to others – making eye contact with another person who is not smiling and get them to smile. She said “You never know when someone needs a friendly smile to help pick them up. It doesn’t matter if you know them or not. Sometimes a kind gesture is all it takes to make them happy, in return you will find that you have become happier yourself.” Thus, the ‘gift’ of a smile... The young man took the teacher’s advise and found happiness himself – a lovely lesson.
